The region of Thessaly occupies the central-eastern part of
continental Greece and is comprised of the following prefectures:
Karditsa (capital is Karditsa), Larisa (capital is Larisa), Magnesia
(
capital is Volos) and Trikala (capital is Trikala). It has a total area
of 14,036 square kilometers which is roughly 10.6% of the area of
the entire country. The region of Thessaly, is characterized by a
highly variable landscape which includes some of the most
interesting and unique formations of Greece. In the mountain
range of Olympus, seat of Zeus and home of the twelve Gods of
ancient mythology lays the highest mountain peak of Greece, the
Mitikas” (2,917 meters).
In the past few years, the growth of ecotourism and agro-tourism
has created a new wave of visitors which center their visit on
coming in contact with the natural environment and local cultural
tradition.
In Volos and Larissa there are conference facilities that can host
every type of event.
The metropolitan area of Larissa, the capital of Thessaly, is home
to more than 170,000 people, making it the biggest city of the
periphery. It borders on the north with the districts of West and
Central Macedonia, on the south with the region of Sterea Ellada,
on the west with Epirus and on the east with the Aegean Sea. It
should also be noted that in the prefecture of Thessaly belong the
Sporades islands as well (Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos).
Thessaly has a comparative advantage because of its
geographic place, which is in the centre of Greece and so it is
crossed by all the main road and train axis.
The railway transport lines that can be found in the Region are:
The harbor of Volos, constitutes the main harbor of Central
Greece and connects the region, as well as the rest of the country
with the Sporades islands (Skiathos, Skopelos, Glossa and
Alonnisos).
The region is directly linked to the rest of Europe through the
