NORTH AEGEAN ISLANDS
Limnos, Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Samothraki, Ikaria
and other smaller islands form a group of islands
in the North-Eastern Aegean Sea, which is often
considered to be Europe’s traditional sea border
with the east. Smaller islands include Fournoi,
Oinousses, Psara and Agios Efstratios. Maybe
these islands are less popular than those of the
Cyclades and the Dodekanese, yet they are no less
beautiful and in many ways have retained their
originality and uniqueness.
H I S TOR Y & CU L T URE
The islands of the north Aegean were in such a position that
shipping and trade contributed greatly to the development of a
significant culture. The histories of the island dates back to 4000
BC and among findings made on the island are the remains of a
number of various civilizations and empires including Neolithic,
Venetian, Byzantine and Turkish.

Positioned in the north-eastern Aegean across the coast of Asia
Minor, Lesvos, Chios, Samos, hold a prominent position on the
map of universal intellect, being the birthplace of many famous
ancient scientists, philosophers and artists.
T RANS POR T A T I ON
Limnos, Samos, Lesvos and Chios all boast international airports
with charter flights and regular domestic flights to most of the
North-Eastern Aegean islands.
There are frequent flights from Athens and Thessaloniki to
Lesvos, Limnos, Samos and Chios. These airports also receive
several direct charter flights from Europe, particularly during the
summer months. In fact, Limnos has an excellent airport,
possessing a very long runway capable of supporting Antonov
carriers.
The islands are connected with the mainland Greece through
frequent ferry-connections with the ports of Piraeus, Thessaloniki,
Rafina and Kavala. There are also ferryboat services and
connections amongst them, as well as with other island groups.
